Merino Wool Knitted Fabric
Orneule’s 100% merino wool knitted fabric is a responsible and natural choice. Our product range includes various merino wool knitted fabrics, with the most popular being interlock and jacquard fabrics made from customers’ own designs.
Why Choose Merino Wool Knitted Fabric?
Merino wool, originating from the Merino sheep, is regarded as one of the finest types of wool. It is long-fibered and fine wool that feels soft and pleasant on the skin.
The softness, breathability, and warmth of merino wool make it an ideal material for many purposes. Merino wool is popular in base layers and children’s clothing, but it is also suitable for dresses and accessories.
How to Care for Merino Wool Garments?
The merino wool yarn used in our knitted fabrics is Basolan-treated, which means that our knitted fabrics can be washed in a washing machine on a 30 degree gentle cycle.
However, we recommend considering the following tips for caring for wool garments:
- Clean wool garments primarily by hanging them out and airing. Remove any stains locally.
- When washing, use a detergent which is specially designed for wool.
- Brushing the wool garment with a soft clothing brush helps prevent pilling.
- Store wool garments in a protected place, preferably folded on a shelf, with good air circulation.

The Origin of the Fiber and Yarn We Use
Our merino wool fabrics are knitted in Orivesi, Finland. We use certified merino wool yarn from Italian yarn supplier Filivivi. Our fabrics are finished in Finland or in Poland with reliable partners (dye houses).
Countries of Origin:
Uruguay (the largest country of origin at the moment) + Argentina, and South Africa.
Yarn Production:
Here is more information about the merino wool yarn making process at Filivivi:
All yarns are spun at Filivivi-owned Rolana mills in Romania.
In the case of melange colored yarns, the raw wool comes from the country of origin to Italy, where the dyeing tops are made with an Italian partner (dye house Ferraris, and nowadays also with the new partner dye house Tinta Lana). When the dyeing tops are ready after 3-4 weeks, they go to Romania for spinning.
The finishing, packaging and inspection of the melange colored yarns take place in Italy, from where they are delivered to Orivesi, Finland.
The process for the solid colored yarns : the raw wool goes from the country of origin directly to Romania for spinning. These finished raw yarns are sent to Italy, where the yarns are dyed in Filivivi-owned dyehouse in Tintoria di Verrone. Finishing, packaging and inspection take place in Italy, from where they are delivered to Orneule, Orivesi, Finland.
Certificates:
Filivivi’s merino wool yarns have an Ökotex certificate, as well as a Mulesing free certificate. Orneule’s merino wool fabrics have Ökotex certificate class I.
